New Funding Opportunities for Recession

ECONOMIC DOWNTURN: Update
RECESSION TASK FORCE IN EAST SUSSEX

The Recession Task Force has been set up by East Sussex County Council to act on the current economical climate and its local effects. It is attended by a number of representatives including local Councils, Job Centre Plus, Police and Federation of Small Businesses.

Voluntary and Community Sector (VCS) will have input from three representatives – one from Citizens Advice Bureaux and two general representatives from SpeakUp (East Sussex Countywide Forum for VCS).

The two SpeakUp representatives are: Adam Chugg - CEO Eastbourne Association of Voluntary Services (EAVS), Eastbourne representative at SpeakUp Forum and lead on “Economic Downturn and it’s effects on VCS in East Sussex” project; and Martin Fisher - Manager of Community Enterprise at Rother Voluntary Action (RVA).  The CAB is also part of this group giving further VCS representation.

The primary purpose of the Task Force is to establish shared evidence base drawn from national and local sources and to monitor and predict impacts of the recession. The Task Force will act to maximise impact of the work of different agencies across East Sussex to make best use of available resources. It will also feed into the development of a Local Resilience Plan (LRAP), ESCC Recession Fund, and Office of the Third Sector (OTS) Support for the Third Sector funding which may be available to support VCS in East Sussex.

For further information on the Task Force, evidence gathered of the effect of the downturn on local community and voluntary groups, development of a Local Resilience Plan (LRAP), and OTS funding please see below for documents related to the Recession including  East Sussex County Council Cabinet meeting 28th April 2009 which discussed, noted and agreed an update and action plan to mitigate the impact of the Recession in East Sussex on businesses, individual and communities and the proposed criteria for use of the one off Recession Fund.

Resisting the Recession Workshop, Lewes, 17th June, 9.30am - 1pm (followed by lunch)
A workshop for everyone who supports organisations and groups in the voluntary and community sector in East and West Sussex.

This FREE event will help participants to get to know more about the effects of the recession on the VCS in Sussex, explore together what we can do, and work together to construct a robust evidence base which can be used to demonstrate the importance of the role of the local voluntary and community sector.

You will also be able to meet, discuss and network with others and we will finish with a free lunch. Colleagues from NAVCA (National Association for Voluntary and Community Action) and the University of Brighton will be able to lend their expertise to the success of this event. As well as practitioners from across West and East Sussex, we are also inviting colleagues from Brighton and Hove to help us identify where we can work together across all 3 counties. More information is on Invitation below.
